Counter-Strike 2: Tick Rate Changes Explained

Counter-Strike 2: Tick Rate Changes Explained

In this piece, we’ll go over a very important change, that being Counter-Strike 2 tick rate so don’t miss out on this one.

WHAT DOES TICK RATE MEAN IN CS:GO?

Tick rate represents a refresh frequency in online games. In other words, it determines how many times the necessary information is updated while the match is being played. Official servers for CS:GO matchmaking are based on a tick rate of 64 Hz.

However, third-party sites such as Faceit provide gamers with 128 Hz tick rate servers. This enables much more competitive matches as the game feels more responsive and accurate.

Overall, Valve is lacking regarding its server architecture. Hence, more and more people are switching from official game servers to third-party servers.

There is one thing gamers need to understand about the current state of CS:GO.

A higher tick rate means that you are getting more precise calculations of not only your shots but the movement as well.

The fact is, Counter-Strike is a game based on precision, and you don’t want a poor tick rate to affect your performance, right?

Down below, you will find more information about the new Counter-Strike 2 tick rate system and what it brings to the table.

CS2 TICK RATE CHANGES

Valve is well aware of the fact that Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is lacking in terms of matchmaking tick rate and that they need to address that. This is exactly what they are going to do, but probably not in the way that many expect.

Previous versions of Counter-Strike used ticks in order to determine both shooting and movement. As Valve stated in their “Moving Beyond Tick Rate” video, time between ticks didn’t exist. The sub-tick update is a term you should familiarize yourself with. Basically, the sub-tick architecture is built around the server knowing the exact moment you fired a weapon, jumped, or moved.

HOW WILL TICK RATE CHANGES AFFECT GAMEPLAY IN CS2?

There are still plenty of unknowns regarding the current gameplay state of CS2. Only a small circle of players actually got the beta test invite and the reviews are mixed. In our personal opinion, Counter-Strike 2 tick rates changes will definitely bring improvements to the game as the old official CS:GO competitive play was challenging for this reason.

With the new sub tick architecture, we will hopefully see more and more players give official matchmaking a try. Bear in mind that Valve announced that they are still rolling with 64 Hz. However, the servers could once again be upgraded to a 128 server tick rate which is going to be beneficial for third-party server providers.

When it comes to online gaming, CS2 is one of the most anticipated titles out there. Alongside massive overhauls regarding the graphics and a completely new engine being used, a new server architecture is what both veterans are newcomers are looking for.

WILL FACEIT STILL BE RELEVANT AFTER NEW TICK RATE CHANGES?

Once Counter-Strike 2 is released, it will take some time for players to test things out and see whether there are massive improvements regarding the official servers. If the game actually improves, we might see players leave as the Faceit subscription is not that cheap anymore.

It is also important to mention that Faceit is definitely going to stay relevant for players that want to play against people with similar skills. This is as Valve will have to put in a lot of extra work in order to balance out the current ranking system.

All in all, we believe that the future is bright for Valve’s shooter title. If Counter-Strike 2 tick rates improve, alongside other CS2 gameplay changes, and Valve actually puts in place a reward system for skilled individuals, it has a chance to reclaim the title of being the best first-person shooter on the market.
