The first ever TI was played back in 2011 where 16 teams competed for their share of $1,000,000 in prize money put in place by Valve.

The International 2023 Format & Schedule

The International 2023 is split into several stages. Out of 20 participating teams, twelve around going to qualify through Dota Pro Circuit. In all fairness, these 12 teams are the most battled-hardened and some of the best Dota 2 teams the professional scene has to offer.

An additional eight teams will fight for their TI spot in the Regional Qualifiers. Keep in mind that two teams will qualify from Western Europe and South America while one team from North America, Eastern Europe, China, and Southeast Asia will also fight for their spot.

Group Stage

The group stage of TI 2023 is split into two phases. During phase one, teams are split into four groups consisting of five teams each. Each and every group playing system is based on the single round-robin format.

All of the series are played in the best of two format, which means a tie is an option in these bouts. The best two teams from each group will get matched against an opponent ranked in the 3rd or 4th place from the opposite group. For instance, Group A will cross paths with Group B, and the same applies to Groups C and D. Bear in mind that the bottom team is eliminated from the event.

Phase two, also known as the seeding decider allows the remaining sixteen teams to compete in eight different best of three series in order to determine the main event bracket placement.

Playoffs(Main Event)

A total of eight matches are played in a double-elimination bracket. This format means that the upper bracket teams will get a second chance if they lose one match. On the other hand, if the teams from the lower bracket lose one match, they are eliminated.
