How the Economy Works in CSGO Economy is one of the most important factors in csgo and can really make an impact in the winner of a map. First we can define economy in CSGO by saying that it is everything that relates to the money that players have during the rounds of competitive matches. You have probably noticed by now that every time a new round starts each player earn money that they can spend buying weapons, grenades, etc. As you also have probably realized you don’t win the same amount of money every round.

The money you will earn will depend on the outcome of the previous rounds, how many enemies you killed, which weapon you used to kill them, if you planted or defused the bomb, etc. Basically any important action that you do during the match will give you money, and sometimes will give money to your team too.


Before showing you how many money you can win per round you should realize how important it is to have a stable economy on your team. It’s logical that if you win a lot of rounds in a row you will be getting a lot of money and you can use it to buy any weapon on the game, along with kevlar, grenades and etc. That also means that your enemies will have more difficulties buying their preferred weapons since most of the times all 5 players will die when you lose the round, and re-buying weapons for an entire team really costs a fortune. Many times you can’t even buy a lot more than a few pistols and work with that to try to win a round.

Obviously you already know that it is a huge disadvantage to play with cheaper guns, like pistols or SMG’s against expensive riffles, and this means that most of the times you will lose those situations. The only effective way to fight this is trying to make some eco-rounds when you don’t have the money to buy good riffles. This will allow you to save the money for the next round in which you will probably be able to buy what you need in order for it to be a fair fight in that round. However if you lose that round too you will not have a lot of money on the next round and your economy will be broken.

The term “breaking the economy” applies to whenever you win a round that force your opponents to eco or force-buy on the next round, or even on the next couple of rounds. The majority of times the team which breaks the economy of the opponent the most will win that map.

The next sheet shows how many money you can win every round.


CSGO is a very good balanced game. The economy system also shows this, since if you lose rounds in a row you will be receiving more money each round, in order for you to buy better weapons. As you can see by the image above if you lose 5 or more rounds in a row you will receive 3400$, which is more than the 3250$ you win when you win a round. This allows you to compete with the weapons of your enemies, in order for you to play a fair fight. If you lose a round after you have won one, your losing bonus will be restarted, even if you have lost 5 rounds in a row before winning one, so be alert to this.


The term gun round is referred to a round in which both teams have money to buy their “standard” weapons, along with kevlar+helmet, grenades and other utility. In the current meta of csgo you would like to use the AK-47, M4A4/M4A1-S or the AWP in the majority of rounds, so that means you will need to have between 4000-5000 dollars in order to make a solid riffle buy, and around 6500$ if you want an Awp. However you won’t have this kind of money in a lot of the rounds so you will have to decide between making eco-rounds or force-buy rounds, depending also on your enemies economy.

Like I said before your goal must be to break your opponents economy as many times as possible, giving you access to fight against eco-rounds. So you should always be alert to your opponents economy, so you can force-buy in rounds where you will break your opponent’s economy in case of a round win.


Managing your economy individually is never good. If you watch professional matches you can see that many times people drop weapons to other teammates. The objective of this factor is to maintain the same amount of money on all players of the team. This is crucial since you can’t drop grenades, so if one of your teammates can’t buy grenades and you have money on your pocket that would be your fault.

In matchmaking you often see a lot of people who basically never drops a gun to the teammates. In their mind they think that they won that money by themselves, dying lesser times than their teammates. However you should always remind yourself that csgo is a team game, and if you have money is because all the team did a good job in the prior rounds.

Also remember that the maximum amount of money that you can have is 16000$. It really doesn’t make sense if a person reaches these values and don’t drop weapons to your teammates, because if you don’t spend it you won’t actually win more in the next round, so you might as well spend it for your poorest teammates.



As you know every match starts with a pistol round. In these rounds every player starts with 800$, which you can use only to buy pistols, some grenades or kevlar. The majority of professional players nowadays choose to buy kevlar in this round, and just play with their glock, Usp-S or P2000. Sometimes you could also have a player on your team that can sacrifice buying kevlar in order to buy some grenades, defuse kits, or even buying a Desert-Eagle or a Tec-9, and drop it to a teammate to give some firepower advantage to the team. This is obviously based on the tactics that you will use in this round and you should only buy grenades that you know that are crucial for a certain play that your team will try to do.

Anyway, it really doesn’t matter what equipment you will buy in this round in terms of economy, since trying to save 800 dollars is not really worth it, because you won’t have kevlar or grenades and you would be very vulnerable against your opponents. The only time in which you can try to save those 800 dollars is if you want to buy an Awp very early in the game. This is rare in the current CSGO meta, and not really worth it in my opinion, since you should really try your best to win the pistol round. Winning the pistol round will give your team 3250$ per player, instead of 1400$ in case of losing it.

So you can see that winning the pistol round will put you in a situation where you can buy some SMG’s and kevlar, or even some rifles against pistols and kevlar at maximum. This is obviously a huge advantage and if your enemies try to buy instead of making a full-eco round, you can even be against another eco-round on the third round, if you obviously win the second.

Also remember that a knife kill would reward you with 1500$. This kind of money can be very helpful on the second round, and pistol rounds are the easiest rounds to get a knife kill. If you are closer to your opponents and if you catch them on their backs or if they run out of bullets you can try to knife them, as long as you are in a safe situation. Remember that pistols are the secundary weapons, so if your opponent run out of bullets they won’t have another weapon to switch to and you can knife them if you are close enough and without having other enemies nearby.


So, what to do in the second round? If you lose the pistol round you are very limited in choices. Nowadays most professional teams always “force-buy” on the second round if they have lost the first. Force-buying is essentially buy everything you can, which in this case will most likely be some Five-Sevens or Tec-9’s and obviously kevlar and as much grenades as you can buy. The only exception to not force-buy on the second round is if you are playing on the Terrorist Side and you planted the bomb on the first round.

Planting the bomb gives an additional 800$ per player, along with the round bonus. This means that you will get 2200$ for the second round and another 1900$ for the third round, making it 4100$ total, without mentioning the money you will win for every player killed. Now you have enough money to buy AK’s, kevlar and some utility on the third round, having a good opportunity to win a round earlier in the game.

If you are playing on the CT-side you should always force-buy on the second round. The other team will be playing mostly with SMG’s and if you can pick your spots well you can win the round and break your opponents economy immediately.  Your opponents will be forced to play with a weak buy and then eco on the following round which is huge for you. If you lose your force buy don’t worry. You wouldn’t have money to buy good riffles on the third round anyway, so it’s always better to force buy and then eco, than eco two rounds in a row.

Now, if you are on the winning side of the pistol round you probably think that it’s best to buy the best weapon possible to minimize the chance of your opponents winning the force buy. Well, this is true at some extent and wrong on the other. As you can see, on the image I posted above, the SMG’s (with the exception of the P90) have a killing reward of 600$, instead of the regular 300$.

This allows you to farm a lot of money from the second and third round where you will be playing against only pistols most of the time. You will also have a lot of mobility and, most importantly, if you die you won’t leave a precious riffle to your opponents, that really can cause damage to your team. Instead you will be giving them a cheaper gun which is really not worth of saving into a buy-round.


These are the rounds in which both teams will have the weapons they want and are crucial during the game. Usually a team can only make a full buy one or two times before they have to make an eco, unless they have won a lot of rounds before where almost all the players have survived. The team who are losing must win these type of rounds, preferably winning at least two in a row, to build up their economy. This way momentum can shift and the team that is losing can have a good opportunity to break the opponent’s economy and play against eco rounds.

In these rounds always make sure you buy as much grenades as possible, along with the best weapon you can buy. This will allow you to have the best possible chance of winning these important rounds and gives you a better chance of winning the map.


I hope that by now you have learned that you should eco and buy as a team. However when you play match-making or other platforms without knowing the other players on your team you might get a few surprises. Many people, especially in the lower ranks will always buy weapons and won’t make ecos, when they are poor in money. These situations are hard to deal with, but if you have more 3 or more players buying on your team you might as well buy too. Think that if you eco and they buy, then if you lose the round you would have money to buy a good riffle but they will probably be only able to buy pistols. So, your riffle would not be able to make a difference in this round, in the majority of times.

However if you force buy with them, even if it would be better to make a team-eco, you will get a fairly reasonable chance of winning the round and then work from there.

Remember that if you notice that your teammates don’t understand the economy rules you can always try to convince your team to eco. This will depend a lot on the personality of your players, but if you show a nice attitude you have a good chance of being listened. If you can’t convince them to listen to you, you might as well just go with them instead, because saving alone won’t help your team and yourself.

In summary learning the rules of economy will help you get the best chances possible to win rounds. It’s very important that you get familiar with the cost of the guns you use the most, grenades and kevlar. This will make you a more complete player and you will get better understanding of the game.
