League of Legends Worlds 2023 Full Guide

What is the LoL World Championship?

League of Legends World Championship is an annual event hosted for the best LoL teams across the world. This international tournament is hosting every region that is competing professionally.

The event itself is hosted by Riot Games. This year’s edition of LoL Worlds put in place various changes regarding the format and overall structure of the event.

World Championship 2023 Venue and Location

After a long wait, the most popular League of Legends esports tournament is coming back to South Korea. Given the fact that this is going to be a lengthy event, several venues have been booked.

The whole thing is going to start in Seoul, in the LoL Park venue. After a couple of days, Worlds will travel to Busan until the finals, when they will return to Seoul. The grand final is played in the Gocheok Sky Dome and the tickets are already hard to come by.

League of Legends World Championship Format & Schedule

Even though game rules have not changed much in recent years, Riot Games decided that now is the perfect time to make adjustments to make competition more fierce. Worlds 2023 is going to be contested in three stages that we are going to explain below.

Worlds Qualifying Series

There is one spot up for grabs. 4th ranked teams from LCS and LEC will play the game in the best of five format to determine which team will qualify for the main tournament.

Bear in mind that in recent statements, Riot announced that they want to expand the World Qualifying Series even more.

The deciding game will start on October 9th, 2023 when Golden Guardians will go against Team BDS to find out who is going to qualify for the Worlds Play-In Stage. At the time of writing, Golden Guardians are minor favorites with odds of 1.68, while Team BDS’s odds of winning this game are set to 2.15.

Play-in Stage(Round 1 & 2)

worlds 2023 play-in bracket

A total of eight teams are split into two groups of four. They are going to compete in the double-elimination bracket. Keep in mind that all of the matches are played in the best of three format.

Group A:

  • GAM Esports
  • LOUD
  • PSG Talon
  • Rainbow7

Group B:

  • CTBC Flying Oyster
  • DetonatioN FocusMe
  • Team Whales
  • TBA – Worlds Qualifying Series Spot

The best two teams from each group will advance through to the Play-In Round 2. Teams that end up in 3rd and 4th spot in the stage are eliminated from the tournament.

With four qualified teams, Play-In Round 2 can commence. The upper bracket winner from the group stage will compete against the Lower bracket winners. This means that the #1 team from Group A will face off against the #2 team from Group B, and vice versa.

Every game is played in the best of five format and two winners are going to advance to the Swiss Stage of World Championship 2023.

Swiss Stage

In total, 14 teams qualified directly, while the two teams qualified via the Play-In Stage Round 2. All 16 teams are going to compete in a single group. The matches are determined using the Swiss System Format.

The first stage of the Swiss group will see clashes between teams from different regions. On top of that, rounds 2-5 are based on the team’s win and loss record.

In this stage, elimination and advancement matches are played in the best of three format while every other bout is contested in the best of 1 match. Here is a list of 14 teams coming from Europe, North America, China, and South Korea that got direct entry to this stage:

  • Team Liquid
  • Cloud9
  • NRG
  • MAD Lions
  • Fnatic
  • G2 Esports
  • Weibo Gaming
  • LNG Esports
  • Bilibili Gaming
  • JD Gaming
  • Dplus
  • KT Rolster
  • T1
  • Gen.G
  • TBA – Play-In Stage Round 2 Slot #1
  • TBA – Play-In Stage Round 2 Slot #2

Rosters that claim 3 victories in the Swiss stage will advance through to the Knockout stage. On the other hand, teams that accumulate three defeats are eliminated from the group stage.

Knockout Stage

This is where it all leads to. This crowning event will wrap everything up in the Knockout stage where a total of eight teams will play their hearts out to determine this year’s champions.

A single-elimination bracket has been put in place. This means that there are no second chances for anyone in the Knockout stage of World Championship 2023. If a team loses one match, they are eliminated.

When it comes to choosing sides, teams with the side selection privilege will choose the starting side for the first game. Afterward, the losing squad can choose the side they want to start on in the following game.

Quarterfinals, semifinals, and following matches will have side selection privileges determined by a coinflip.

Every match played in this stage is contested in the best of five format including the grand final. Last but not least, this stage will begin on November 2nd and is going to last until November 19th.

Teams Competing at LoL Worlds 2023

As we already mentioned, there are going to be 22 teams in total playing for their share of prize pool money. Teams originate from across the globe, including the not-so-popular League of Legends esports regions such as Latin America or Japan.

lol worlds 2023 teams

Below, we are going to include teams representing all LoL esports regions.

South Korea – LCK

Some of the best LoL teams are coming from the LCK region. It is going to be interesting to see whether any of the teams from the LCK spot will be able to overcome titans from other regions as they did in previous years. Here are the Worlds 2023 teams from South Korea:

  1. Gen.G
  2. T1
  3. KT Rolster
  4. Dplus KIA

According to the popular betting platform, CSGO500, the biggest favorite to win League of Legends Worlds 2023 is Gen.G with the odds of 6.50.

China – LPL

If someone told us that China would overcome South Korea and become a major region in the world of esports, barely anyone would believe that this could be the case. However, LPL teams have fought tooth and nail to come this far and there is a realistic chance that this region will be crowned champions of Worlds 2023. Here are the teams representing China:

  1. JD Gaming
  2. Bilibili Gaming
  3. LNG Esports
  4. Weibo Gaming

By taking a closer look at the outright betting odds provided by popular match betting sites, we came to a simple conclusion. They are all ranking JD Gaming as the biggest favorite to win the Worlds 2023 tournament. At the time of writing, the odds of them winning the grand final game are set at 2.20.

Europe – LEC

Despite participating in all editions of World Championship events, European League of Legends teams never had much success. This time around, achievements during the regular season allowed LEC teams to join the fight with three teams.

  1. G2 Esports
  2. Fnatic
  3. MAD Lions

Let’s not forget to mention the fact that LEC will have a chance to grab another spot during the Worlds Qualifying Series where Team BDS will battle it out against Golden Guardians as the winning team will book a spot in the Swiss stage.

Right now, G2 Esports is the most favored squad from the European region to win Worlds 2023. However, a lot of punters do not believe in them hence why the odds of them lifting the Summoner’s Cup are very high, 26, to be more precise.

North America – LCS

Everyone knows that teams from North America do not stand a chance against South Korea or any other Southeast Asia teams. However, it is also widely known that LCS teams will not go down without a fight. Here are the three confirmed teams that are representing NA:

  1. NRG
  2. Cloud9
  3. Team Liquid

Before the Worlds 2023 Swiss stage starts, North America will have a realistic chance of getting another spot for themselves. Golden Guardians will bring the fight to the LEC counterpart, Team BDS in a game that will determine who will join others at the Swiss stage.

By taking a closer look at the outright odds for LoL Worlds 2023, it took us a while to find the biggest NA favorite. Right now, Cloud9 has the highest chance according to gambling sites with the odds of 81 to lift the trophy.

PCS teams will have to choose their battles wisely. Given that this is not a tier 1 league, two teams representing the Pacific region will have their hands full as they start their journey in the Play-In stage.

  1. PSG Talon
  2. CTBC Flying Oyster

Since PCS representatives will have to play additional matches, the odds of them winning the Worlds 2023 are high. Currently, the chances of PSG Talon winning the event are set to 400.

LLA – Latin America

Alongside their rivals in the North, Latin America also earned themselves a single spot in the Worlds 2023. However, they will also have a hard time, as Riot Games placed them in the Play-In stage as well.

  1. Rainbow7

If some of you want to place money on the LLA team going to the end, you should think twice about your choices as this is the least favored roster coming in with the odds of 1500.

VCS – Vietnam

Despite having an all-around competitive regular season, VCS was only able to get two spots in the World Championship 2023 tournament.

  1. Team Whales
  2. GAM Esports

The chances are high that both squads will struggle in the Play-In stage and we do not see a way for them to reach the Swiss stage at all. Betting sites agree with us, as VCS squads are amongst the biggest underdogs.

CBLOL – Brazil

Fans from Brazil can rejoice as their best roster is going to represent the region. Unfortunately, there is a realistic chance that their squad could easily miss out on the Swiss stage spot if they are not focused enough.

  1. LOUD
In the opening match of Play-in Stage, LOUD will play against GAM Esports.

LJL – Japan

Last but not least, Japan’s LJL is also being represented on the biggest stage. However, Japan’s squad is going to clash heads with their rivals from Brazil, Vietnam, and other regions that are not among the strongest.

  1. DetonatioN FocusMe
